INTRO TO CHIP CARVING with Sarah Marriage (18 Apr 2026)

This is an IN-PERSON CLASS.

Students will learn basic chip carving techniques. Students will also take home a chip carving knife to continue honing their new skill. Materials included.

Sarah Marriage, WOO's founder, is a maker of fine furniture and other wooden objects. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Sarah studied architecture at Princeton University and fine woodworking at The College of the Redwoods (now The Krenov School). She has taught at The Krenov School, Penland School of Craft, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Sarah's work has shown at galleries and trade shows across the US, including Dwell on Design in Los Angeles, ICFF in New York, and Pritam & Eames Gallery in East Hampton, NY.

SPOON CARVING with Sophie Glenn (19 Apr 2026)

In this class we use basic carving techniques and woodworking machines to create spoons using kiln dried lumber (as opposed to green wood spoon carving which uses wood freshly cut from a tree). Choose from a selection of woods, design your own shape, and we'll teach you how to make it! We'll use the bandsaw, carving gouges, rasps, files, and abrasives to reach our final spoon shapes.

Class includes three hours of instruction and all tools and materials.

Born and raised in New York City, Sophie received her BFA in Sculpture and Drawing from SUNY Purchase College, and her MFA in Furniture Design and Woodworking from San Diego State University. She has exhibited her work across the country, including Blue Spiral 1 Gallery (NC), the Center for Art in Wood (PA), and the Metal Museum (TN), and has been fortunate to receive several grants, fellowships, and residencies to help advance her career. Sophie has held academic appointments at Tennessee Technological University and Mississippi State University, and taught workshops at A Workshop of Our Own (MD), Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (TN) and the Appalachian Center for Craft (TN).

CUTTING BOARDS with Sarah Marriage (25 Apr 2026)

Cutting Board Class Winter 2018

This is an IN-PERSON CLASS.

This workshop is a great introduction to woodworking and to our shop facilities. Starting with a rough piece of lumber, students will transform it into a beautiful and functional cutting board while gaining hands-on experience with the full process of milling wood—from rough to refined.

Class Schedule:

Saturday April 25: 10am-1pm

Students will safely use a wide range of tools, including the chop saw, jointer, planer, band saw, drill press, router table (with a roundover bit), and sanders (standing belt sander, disc sander, and random orbital sanders). Along the way, we'll cover wood grain, orientation, and finishing techniques to help bring out the natural beauty of the material.

Whether you're brand new to woodworking or brushing up on your skills, you'll leave with a one-of-a-kind piece and a solid foundation in machine work.

Open to all skill levels.

Intro to Turning (9 May 2026)

This is an IN-PERSON CLASS.

This is a 4 hour, beginner level workshop designed to give students an introduction to turning wood. Woodturning is the craft of shaping wood while it spins on a lathe. Furniture components such as legs, spindles, and pegs; tool handles, and even baseball bats are all made by turning. A great entry point for woodworkers, woodturning offers an opportunity to work creatively with wood right away, and leave with a finished product.

Students will learn proper lathe setup, safety, and spindle turning technique. They’ll leave with a custom, handmade mallet of their own design, a necessary tool to add to their woodworking arsenal.

Class capacity: 3 students

SHAKER SIDE TABLE with Sarah Marriage (16 May 2026)

This is a TWO SESSION IN-PERSON CLASS.

In this class, students will build a solid wood side table with the clean, classic look of Shaker design—using modern, beginner-friendly techniques. We’ll use the Festool Domino for joinery and a tapering jig on the table saw to shape the legs. Students will glue up their own tabletops and learn how to attach them in a way that allows for natural wood movement. This is a great project for building confidence with furniture-making basics while creating a beautiful and functional piece.
