Learn to design and tie your own handmade brooms for home and shop use.
In this free class we will cover classical and sculptural brooms forms like the turkey tail, hawk’s wing, and a classic hearth sweeper. In just a few short, fun-filled hours you will learn four different broom forms as well as how to source and identify good broom corn, and how to fabricate essential broom making tools at home, like spreaders and bodkins!
This introduction will give you all of the skills you need to design your own brooms from scratch! Join WOO, Aspen Golann & Morgan M. Ward for this free class and gain a new hobby for life.
No prerequisites, all skills level welcome. All you need is a computer and a good internet connection!
WOO is a non-profit safe space for training underrepresented genders in our field. As such, enrollment is limited to women, non-binary, and trans folks over the age of 18.
If you’d like to work along with us at home, you can buy a kit of broom corn and twine, by picking the registration FREE CLASS WITH KIT MATERIALS**! You will need additional tools in order to complete your broom, all of which are readily available at your local stores/internet shops.

Materials included in the KIT:
- 18" BROOM CORN!
- #18 GAUGE NYLON TWINE, WALLACE CORDAGE!
Additional materials required, to be purchased by students:
- 1'-2' (one foot - two foot) section of a 2x4 or a big stick; used to fold the broom corn
- Utility knife or scissors; used to cut the broom corn
- Bucket of warm water; used to soak the broom corn to make it more flexible (not required!)
- Long Sleeves & pants/long skirt; broom corn can make bare skin a little itchy
No prerequisites, all skills level welcome. All you need to follow along at home is a KIT, the additional materials above, a computer, and a good internet connection!
Aspen Golann is a studio furniture maker, artist and educator based in Western North Carolina. She holds a degree in Fine Furniture from The North Bennet Street School in Boston and is currently the Wood Shop Coordinator at The Penland School of Craft in Penland, NC.
Before making furniture she was a weaver, farmer, teacher and coastal navigator. She loves woodworking experiments, pizza ovens, old clocks, and the intersection of traditional and contemporary aesthetics.
She exhibits nationally and is published in Fine Woodworking, Luxe Magazine, Art New England, and American Period Furniture. She does domestic and international commission work for designers in the UK, Asia, and across the United States. She has received support for her work from The Maloof Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
